How Many Yards Are in a Ton?

This is one of the most common questions we get, and the answer depends on the rock’s material. Here’s a general guideline:

  • Most decorative rock: 1 yard ≈ 1.3 tons
  • 3/4 yard ≈ 1 ton is a safe estimate for many average-density rocks
  • Volcanic rocks (like Western Sunset): Lighter weight, closer to a 1:1 ratio (1 yard ≈ 1 ton)
  • Red Lava Rock: Extremely porous, closer to 0.7 tons per yard

If you’re working on a specific project and need help figuring out the right amount, give us a call or stop by—we’re happy to help you calculate what you need. Also, if you’re looking for a decorative product and you don’t see it on our website, we can most likely source the product you need if you are planning on ordering 6 or more yards.
